1983
Nintirri Centre started life in August 1983 as the WASH (Women’s Activity and Socialising House). A group of local women opened the WASH because they were concerned about the lack of facilities in the town for non-working women, especially women with children.
1985
The aim of the founding committee was to establish a multipurpose centre that benefited the community as a whole. The centre was renamed in 1985 and from that time was known as the “Nintirri Centre”. It is understood that Nintirri translates to mean “holding a child on the hip” or “nurturing” in the language of the Eastern Guruma People, the traditional owners of the land on which the Centre sits.
1988
Nintirri became an incorporated body in 1988 and has since grown to an organisation employing over 30 people across six core areas of service, enriching the lives of within their community.
