Purpose of the position
To be responsible for the delivery of the early childhood education (ECE) program, based on curriculum frameworks in line with National Quality Standard (NQS) whilst collaborating with the educators in your room.
Provide general assistance to the operation and function of the service across the following areas:
- Babies Room,
- Toddler Room,
- Kindy Room,
- School Readiness Programme,
- After School Hours Care,
- Vacation Care
when providing non-contact time cover, lunch cover, undertaking assistance duties during the delivery of the School Readiness Programme and After School Hours Care.
This takes into account the needs of the children, parents and families. Encourage and promote engaged participation in activities, use of the service and the organisation within the community. All key responsibilities are based on the National Law and Regulations, the Principles, Practices and Outcomes detailed in the EYLF, FSAC and the NQF Quality Areas, Standards and Elements. All educators are expected to have a working knowledge of these documents.
Responsibilities & duties
Responsibility 1 – Assisting in the implementation of the NELC Educational Program across all NELC areas (NQS Area 1: Educational program and practice)
This includes:
- Implement a diverse educational program that is of a high quality and based on the appropriate curriculum frameworks, and with reference to the NQS, considering the developmental needs, culture, interests and abilities of all the children attending your assigned room.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of effective and valuable documentation of children’s learning in accordance with the service philosophy and the learning outcomes (EYLF and FSAC).
- Utilise a variety of teaching strategies including intentional teaching and reflective practice in your daily work.
Key Performance Indicators – Educational program in line with EYLF and NQS implemented, documentation up to date and comprehensive.
Responsibility 2 – Assist in the promotion of Health and Safety of all Staff and Children (NQS Quality Area 2: Children’s health and safety; Quality Area 3: Physical Environment)
This includes:
- Maintain high levels of hygiene, health and wellbeing and WHS in accordance with policies, procedures and relevant legislations.
- Assist in the service’s delivery of a safe and stimulating environment where all staff and children are protected from hazards or harm.
- Treat each child with dignity and respect.
- Ensure children are appropriately and comfortably dressed for all activities.
- Assist in the implementation of an action plan for children in your room who have diverse or specific medical needs.
- Monitor the safety and age appropriateness of toys and equipment.
- Identify and respond to children in your room who are at risk of harm and act accordingly (in collaboration with the Director).
- Assist in the management of challenging behaviour using effective strategies.
- Respond to, and administer first aid, ensuring compliance to strict recording and notification management practices and ensuring parents are notified in the correct manner when an incident occurs.
- Report accidents, incidents and near misses including unsafe buildings and equipment to the Director.
Key Performance Indicators – Service facilities across all areas compliant with regulations and appropriate reporting procedures followed.
Responsibility 3 – Collaborate with the Team of Educators to Build Positive Relationships with all Stakeholders (NQS Quality Area 4: Staffing arrangements; Quality Area 5: Relationships with children; Quality Area 6; Collaborative partnerships with families and communities)
This includes:
- Work cooperatively, ethically and respectfully with your team members and other educators.
- Develop and maintain respectful, supportive, collaborative and responsive relationships with children and their families.
- Develop collaborative working relationships with the Director, Assistant Director, educators and other staff, including teachers from local schools, trainees and work placement students, to ensure the developmental needs of each child are met.
- Work closely with users to ensure a mutual understanding of their needs whilst building and maintaining a professional rapport.
- Assist in the promotion of an understanding of the NQS and the curriculum framework documents within the service community – including educators, families and children, as appropriate.
- Communicate effectively, consistently and professionally with parents, staff and external organisations.

Responsibility 4 – Participate in the Effective Administration and Management of the Service (NQS Quality Area 7: Leadership and service management)
This includes:
- Understand and comply with all organisational and service-specific policies and procedures.
- Ensure your work practices are in accordance with the NQS and reflect the philosophy, policies and procedures of the service.
- Stay informed about current trends in policy changes within the sector.
- Work with the Director and other team members to ensure the continuous improvement of the service and implement the service Quality Improvement Plan.
- Inform the Director of any staffing issues which need to be addressed including, but not limited to, changes required to the staff roster in response to staff: child ratios, recruitment, induction and orientation of new staff members, staff meetings, supervision of workplace students and volunteers (in consultation with the HR Officer/Operations Manager where appropriate).
- Assist in the process of induction and orientation for new families and children.
- Attend meetings and provide information, reports and assistance to the Director and educators when required.
